We have already witnessed some incredible performances throughout the first few days of the 2023 Australian Open. The decision to use the final set tiebreak has, however, generated some discussion.

The first grand slam of the year is currently underway on its third day, and within just three days, the tournament has already given us some spectacular performances, such as Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray’s five-set match that resulted in a five-set tie-break victory. It takes endurance to complete a Grand Slam, especially on the men’s side. Not in vain, the lengthier Grand Slam final in 2012 between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was held in Australia and went in favour of the Serbian with a final score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, and 7-5.

Tennis matches can continue as long as the two players are fighting, but because of TV rights, worries about the players’ health, and the need to hold fans’ attention, the Grand Slam board has thought of modifying the fifth set rules, particularly those pertaining to the tiebreak.

How does the final tie-break set work in the Australian Open?

All major tournaments will test a 10-point tie-break that will be played at 6-6 in the last set, according to a March 2022 announcement by the Grand Slam Board, which represents all four Slams. The only major that used the tiebreak prior to that announcement was Australia.

Meanwhile, the rules for the other Slams differed. The last set was decided by a 12-point tie break at Wimbledon and the US Open, while at Roland Garros it was played out until one player won it by two games.

Additionally, the provision “creates greater consistency in the rules.” Finding ways to shorten the games while maintaining their attraction and maybe drawing in larger viewers has raised some worries in recent years. However, there are numerous objections to modifying the laws.
