The first grand slam of the year is a week away and then tennis season has already kicked off. With Australian Open, starting next week from January 16, let us have a look at who are the top heavy favourites this year. Why should they win as we analyse their past performances and recent form, have a look:
Australian Open tennis 2023 men’s singles predictions, top favorites players and odds
1- Rafael Nadal
The 23-time grand slam champion is the top-heavy favourite at the 2023 Australian Open. He will also enter the match as the top seed after Carlos Alcaraz withdrew.
The 36-year-old is the defending champion after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final despite falling behind by two sets and a break last year at Melbourne Park. With his victory, Nadal broke a tie with Novak Djokovic and the now-retired Roger Federer for the first male player to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles.
Following the withdrawal of World No. 1 Alcaraz due to a strange injury sustained during practice, the 2023 Australian Open will feature the famous left-hander as the top seed. Additionally, it means that fifth-ranked Novak Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open a record nine times, will be the fourth seed and will not be able to face Nadal until the final four.
Nadal must immediately recover after beginning the year with two defeats for the first time in his brilliant career. As Team Spain was ousted from the United Cup before the semifinals, the 36-year-old lost to Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom and Alex de Minaur of Australia.
Looking at his ability to come back despite injuries the previous season, the defending champ will be eager to reclaim his title in Melbourne.
2- Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic is back in Australia amd it should not be underestimated. The Serb has won the most titles in Australia with 9 majors which are record-breaking so far, and it tells a lot. Hard court is his preferred surface and he has already started the year by reaching the final at Adelaide International 1 beating Medvedev and Shapovalov.
Djokovic couldn’t defend his title which was later won by Nadal. The Serbian was deported from Australia following a visa ban and vaccination controversy. This time, he won’t make it slip from his hands.
3- Daniil Medvedev
Everyone remembers the iconic final between Nadal and Medvedev at the 2022 Australian Open final. It was a tough fight, a very tough fight. The Russian lost two sets to one lead against Nadal to finish this year’s Australian Open in second place.
Medvedev briefly had the top spot in the world, but it seemed like he had trouble continuing on top. He has since dropped to number 7 in the rankings. He likes the conditions in Australia, where the courts are faster and bounce lower, which is why he has advanced to the final the past two years. Should continue to go smoothly looking at his advancements at the surface.
4- Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios will be a risky floater in Melbourne because of his low relative ranking. Since the uncertain Australian has the talent and self-assurance to defeat anyone, none of the top seeds will look forward to playing him.
At Wimbledon this year, he made it to his first grand slam final, which gave him a new life. At his home slam, Kyrgios will enjoy the attention, love and support of the fans on his home ground. Nick might go deep if he manages his emotions during a favourable draw.
5- Jannik Sinner
The US Open clash between Sinner and Alcaraz was regarded by many as the game of the year. Alcaraz barely prevailed in five sets of the highest-quality match in the competition. He fought Djokovic at Wimbledon, ultimately losing in five, but it showed the world that he is not only a really talented player but also a fighter. Sinner is definitely one of the top favourites for the major event in Melbourne following his huge groundstrokes and as the player moves exceptionally well.
