Following two exhilarating men’s and women’s Ashes cricket series, Australia and England face off in Sydney’s Stadium Australia on Wednesday (16 August), with a first appearance in a Women’s World Cup final on the line.
With Hayley Raso in brilliant form, the tournament co-hosts overcame a shocking loss to Nigeria to eliminate Olympic champions Canada and advance to the round of 16. The Matildas’ hopes may have been dashed by Sam Kerr’s injury just before the competition, but her teammates have responded to the challenge, and a convincing 2-0 victory against Denmark in the round of 16 has established them as serious rivals.
Kerr was still only sparingly used despite a thrilling triumph over France in a penalty shootout to seal a position in the last four for the first time. Their next opponent is England, who have lost just once in their 38 games under coach Sarina Wiegman, to Australia in April.
In their final group match against the People’s Republic of China, the defending European champions came to life, winning 6-1 with to Lauren James’ two goals and three assists. The Chelsea star, however, received a two-match suspension as a result of her red card against Nigeria in the round of 16, a game that England ultimately won on penalties. As a result, should the Lionesses advance that far, she will only be able to play in the final game.
The goals of Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo helped England reach the World Cup semifinals for the third consecutive tournament, despite losing to Colombia right before the break. The squad has been encouraged by Keira Walsh’s recovery from a knee injury sustained in the group stages, but James’ absence would be felt most hard.
