2022 Season Highlights of Top-5 Players

1) Novak Djokovic

After being unable to participate in March, Djokovic returned to the clay court season in April, seeded first, at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, where he had a bye in the first round and faced Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second. Djokovic was defeated in three sets by Davidovich Fokina, marking his first loss in a first round encounter since the 2018 Barcelona Open. Djokovic’s next tournament is the Serbia Open in 2022.

2) Daniil Medvedev

Medvedev reached the final of the Australian Open for the second year in a row in January 2022. Despite taking a two-set lead, he was defeated in five sets by Rafael Nadal in the final. It was the second-longest Major final in history, clocking in at 5 hours and 24 minutes. Medvedev was nominated for the Breakthrough of the Year category at the Laureus World Sports Awards in February.

In a rematch of the Australian Open final, he was defeated in straight sets by Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the Mexican Open. Despite his defeat, he claimed world number one ranking after Djokovic’s loss in the quarter-final of Dubai Open.

Medvedev was eliminated in the third round of the Indian Wells Masters by Gael Monfils. As a result of the loss, he lost his number one status, which was reclaimed by Novak Djokovic. Medvedev had a chance to recapture the number one ranking the next fortnight provided he advanced to the semifinals of the Miami Masters, but he fell one match short, falling in the quarterfinals to defending champion Hubert Hurkacz. Medvedev revealed on April 2 that he would be out for the next “one to two months” of the season due to a hernia operation.

3) Alexander Zverev

Zverev competed in the 2022 Australian Open, reaching the fourth round before losing to Denis Shapovalov, the fourteenth seed.

Zverev defeated Jenson Brooksby at 4:55 a.m. in the 2022 Acapulco Open, setting a new record for the latest match ever played. After losing in doubles, he was forfeited from the event ahead of his next match against Peter Gojowczyk for forcefully and repeatedly assaulting the umpire’s chair with his racket. At the Indian Wells Masters, he lost his first singles match but advanced to the semi-finals in doubles partner Andrey Golubev. He lost in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open to Casper Ruud.

4) Rafael Nadal

Nadal won his 89th ATP singles title at Melbourne Summer Set 1 in January 2022, defeating first-time finalist Maxime Cressy. After victories against Karen Khachanov, Denis Shapovalov, and Matteo Berrettini, Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev in a five-set final, coming back from two sets down to win his second Australian Open championship and 21st grand slam title overall.

Nadal won the Mexican Open without dropping a set, including a win over Medvedev, who had just claimed the world No. 1 position the week before. After that, Nadal was seeded fourth in the 2022 Indian Wells Masters. In the final, Nadal was defeated in straight sets by Taylor Fritz, breaking his winning run. On March 22, he announced that he will miss for four to six weeks owing to a rib stress fracture sustained during the Indian Wells tournament.

5) Stefanos Tsitsipas

Tsitsipas reached the semifinals of the 2022 Australian Open for the third time, where he met Daniil Medvedev in a rematch of the previous year’s semifinal. When his father Apostolos was spotted coaching in Greek, he suffered a coaching violation and lost in four sets.

Tsitsipas became the first guy born in 1998 or later to win 200 career tour-level matches when he defeated Laslo ere in the first round of the 2022 Abierto Mexicano Telcel. Stefanos Tsitsipas successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Masters title in two sets, 6-3, 7-6(3), against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win his second ATP Masters 1000 championship.
