Carlos Alcaraz vs Lorenzo Musetti
At the clay-court competition in Hamburg on Sunday, young Italian Lorenzo Musetti defeated Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling final to claim his maiden ATP Tour victory.
In the second set, the 20-year-old saw five match points come and go before prevailing 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4. Alcaraz, who will become the youngest player to enter the top five since Rafael Nadal in 2005 on Monday, was denied a sixth ATP championship when he suffered his first-ever final defeat.
When Musetti served for the championship with a lead of 5-4 in the second set, the Spanish kid had two match points but held off to avoid a straight-set loss. The world number 62 failed to convert three more match points in the tie-break but succeeded at the sixth attempt 50 minutes later.
Rohan Bopanna/Matwe Middelkoop vs Llyod Glasspool/Harri Heliovaara
The British-Finnish team of Llyod Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara defeated India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Dutch partner Matwe Middelkoop in the Hamburg Open final on Sunday in straight sets.
The fourth-seeded Indo-Dutch team, which this year advanced to the French Open semifinal, lost to the unseeded team of Glasspool and Heliovaara 2-6 4-6 in a match that lasted just over an hour.
The 21st-ranked doubles player in the world, Bopanna, participated in his fourth tour-level final in Hamburg. The 42-year-old veteran previously shared ATP250 victories with fellow countryman Ramkumar Ramanathan at the Adelaide International and Maharastra Open.
He and Denis Shapovalov of Canada, however, were defeated in their summit match at the Qatar Open in Doha in February of this year.
