On Sunday, the World No. 8 added to his five ATP Tour victories from 2021 with his first of the new season, defeating local favourite Diego Schwartzman to win the Argentina Open for the second time.

In Buenos Aires, the 2020 champion overcame a first-set lapse to silence an energetic home crowd and triumph 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 35 minutes.

Top-seeded On his journey to the title match, Ruud had not dropped a set all week, but he got himself into danger before rediscovering his poise to beat the tenacious Argentine.

Following a high-quality start, both players missed opportunities to break, most notably when Ruud blasted a forehand long on set point after a 42-shot lengthy rally, allowing Schwartzman to escape and hold for 5-5.

The Norwegian’s miss seemed to stay in his thoughts, and the Argentine capitalised in the next game to take the first break of the final. Ruud’s groundstrokes began to make uncommon errors, and the World No. 15 was forced to serve out the first set.

Doubles Winner

In the doubles final, the Buenos Aires crowd cheered on two Argentines, but they will be on opposing sides of the net.

Horacio Zeballos and Fabio Fognini of Italy advanced to the Argentina Open final on Saturday, when they will face Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and Andres Molteni. In their second straight Match Tie-break triumph, the second seeds overcame Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.

In the deciding tie-break, Fognini and Zeballos gave up a 5-0 lead, but came back to win the final two points of the match to progress. After surrendering two breaks in the first set, the Italian/Argentine duo won 71% of their first-serve points in the match and regrouped.
