The 36th edition of the Asian Wrestling Championships will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan, from April 9 to April 14.

The next competition for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers was initially planned to take place in New Delhi, India, but was moved due to a sports ministry inquiry against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The national selection trials for the continental meet were held in the Indira Gandhi Arena, under the supervision of a body appointed by the Indian government rather than the WFI.

Aman Sehrawat, the U23 world champion, will represent India at the Asian championships in the men’s 57kg weight class in the place of Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who withdrew from the event due to an injury.

On Friday, Aman Sehrawat defeated Atish Todkar in the championship match 14-4 to claim the title in his preferred class.

Bajrang Punia, an Olympic bronze medallist, decided not to take part in the trials. The men’s 74kg national champion Sagar Jaglan and the men’s 70kg Commonwealth Games champion Naveen Malik both had disappointing results at the national trials.

Mulayam Yadav, the world junior bronze medallist, defeated Naveen Malik, and National Games winner Yash Tushir defeated Sagar Jaglan.

India’s women’s wrestling squad, without Rio 2016 medallist Sakshi Malik and Asian and Commonwealth Games winner Vinesh Phogat, will be led by 19-year-old Antim Panghal.

Antim Panghal, the current Asian junior champion, achieved history when she became the first Indian woman to win the gold medal in the World U20 Wrestling Championships in Bulgaria last year. She will compete in her preferred 53 kg division.

Sonam Malik earned the 62kg berth when she triumphed in each of her three matches by complete technical superiority.

Anshu Malik, who won the silver medal at the 2021 World Championships, and Sarita Mor, who won the bronze medal in the women’s 59kg category in the same competition, are the two top Indian women wrestlers competing in Astana.
