On Monday, the Indian women’s kabaddi team commenced their participation in the 2023 Asian Games with an electrifying 34-34 draw against Chinese Taipei at the Xiaoshan Guali Sports Centre. Pooja Hathwala emerged as a standout performer for India, a team that has won the women’s kabaddi championship twice, managing to execute a critical all-out in the first half. However, an impressive comeback by Chinese Taipei, the 2018 bronze medalists, during the second half resulted in a tie in the Group A kabaddi match.

In contrast to India’s cautious approach, Chinese Taipei concentrated on gaining bonus points within the initial five minutes. Chinese Taipei’s strategy, guided by Hsiu-Chen Feng, proved effective as India trailed for most of the initial half. Nevertheless, Pooja Hathwala executed a game-changing all-out against Chinese Taipei, securing a five-point super raid, including three raid points, which allowed India to head into halftime with a two-point advantage, leading 17-15.
Despite being behind by seven points at one stage, Chinese Taipei managed to seize a 32-30 lead over India in the closing moments. However, when all Indian players returned to the mat following the all-out, they regained control of the match and held a one-point lead with less than 10 seconds remaining before the final whistle. However, a bonus point secured by Chinese Taipei during the final raid resulted in the match ending in a tie.
In their upcoming match on Tuesday, India will face off against the Republic of Korea and conclude their group stage against Thailand on Wednesday. The top two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals, which are scheduled for Friday.
