On Sunday, September 24, during the inaugural day of chess competitions at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Team India experienced a mix of outcomes in both the men’s and women’s individual events. Vidit Gujrathi, the third-seeded Indian grandmaster, faced defeat in his second-round men’s rapid match against Kazybek Nogerbek. Conversely, Koneru Humpy, the Indian grandmaster, demonstrated a strong performance with two consecutive victories in the women’s rapid category.

In the initial round of the men’s individual event, Vidit Gujrathi secured a win against Mohammad Fahad Rahman, an international master from Bangladesh. His compatriot, Arjun Erigaisi, also triumphed over the Philippines’ international master Paulo Bersamina. However, in the second round of the men’s individual event, Team India faced a less favorable outcome. Arjun Erigaisi managed to achieve only a draw against Vietnamese grandmaster Le Tuan Minh, while Vidit Gujrathi experienced an unexpected defeat against his Kazakhstani opponent.

In the women’s category, Koneru Humpy commenced her campaign by defeating Mobina Alinasabalamdari, an Iranian women’s grandmaster. She then continued her winning streak by overcoming the challenge posed by Le Thao Nguyen Pham, an international master from Vietnam. Indian grandmaster Harika Dronavalli had a comfortable victory in her first women’s chess match against Rouda Alali, a women’s candidate master from the UAE. Subsequently, she secured another win against Qianyun Gong, a women’s grandmaster from Singapore.
