In a lopsided fourth quarter contest against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Philippine national basketball team, Gilas, managed to keep their medal hopes alive by narrowly edging out a victory with a final score of 84-83. The outcome of the game appeared secure for Gilas after they displayed strong performance throughout the first three quarters, leading 71-54 at the end of the third period. However, Iran mounted a strong comeback in the final quarter, outscoring Gilas 29-13, the largest point difference in any of the four quarters, and even took the lead twice.
With only 44 seconds left on the game clock, Justin Brownlee’s shot from inside the paint regained the lead for Gilas. Following this crucial play, Gilas demonstrated unwavering resistance and resilience to fend off Iran’s attempts to regain the lead. In the game’s frenetic conclusion, Matin Aghajanpour missed a three-point attempt with 25 seconds remaining, and Calvin Oftana secured the defensive rebound, giving possession back to Gilas and providing them with a much-needed breathing room. Ultimately, Iran’s shooting proved to be their Achilles’ heel, as they only managed to convert 44 percent of their field goals (32 out of 73) and, more importantly, missed six of their 13 free throws.
