On Sunday at the 2023 Asian Games, the Indian women’s basketball team succumbed to 53-111 defeat against hosts China in their women’s Group A match. In all four quarters, the Chinese team displayed a commanding offensive performance. China’s Li Yueru emerged as the top scorer of the match with 25 points, and four other players from the host nation also contributed double-digit scores. Meanwhile, Pushpa Senthil Kumar and Sanjana Ramesh each scored 14 points for India, with Shireen Limaye adding 12 points to the team’s tally.
Despite this defeat, India secured a spot in the women’s basketball quarter-finals at the Asian Games 2023 by finishing second in Group A. This defeat marked India’s first loss in the sport during the tournament, following victories against Indonesia (66-46) and Mongolia (68-62). Teams earn quarterfinal berths based on their combined rankings after the completion of the group stage, with the top eight-ranked sides advancing. Currently, the Indian team holds the sixth position in the rankings.
