Asian Games 2023 Wrestling Trials
The Asian Games 2023 Wrestling trials took place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium located in New Delhi. It took place over a span of two days, from July 22-23. Ahead of the trials, the Asian Olympic body (OCA) granted the IOA with a week extension regarding the submission of participantโs entry list. The previous deadline was set at July 15.
IOA appoints WFI Ad-hoc Committee
The OCA granted the extension under special circumstances related to the current suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India due to sexual harassment allegations against many of its top officials. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have currently appointed an Ad-hoc Committee in its stead. This committee is in charge of the day-to-day affairs of the WFI until an election takes place.
Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat receive direct entry
Elite wrestlers like Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat received direct entry during the wrestling trials. This is because the pair took out additional time to prepare for the recently held trials. As for the rest of the categories, the winners of the trials received the qualification berths for the Asian Games while the runners-up were listed under the standby list.
Ahead of the final decision to grant them direct entry, the ad-hoc committee had earlier suggested one-bout special trials. These suggested bouts would be in both of their respective weight categories, which are the women’s 53 kg and men’s 65 kg, later in August. ย However, the OCA granted an entry list deadline extension spanning only one week and not more as demanded. As such, the panel decided to grant special exemptions to both Bajrang and Vinesh from the trials. The panel granted it on the grounds of their performance during last year and the extra time they took in advance to prepare.
