Both the men’s and women’s squads will feature 12 members each for the upcoming competition in Hangzhou, China, next month.
Sports Ministry announces Indian contingent for Asian Games 2023
Ahead of the competition, the sports ministry announced the Indian contingent for the upcoming Asian Games on Friday. During the announcement, the ministry also announced the squads for both the men’s and women’s kabaddi teams. The women’s kabaddi team features a 12-member squad led by notable players Sakshi Kumari, Sonali Vishnu Shingate and Ritu Negi. These players are all silver medallists from Jakarta 2018.
Meanwhile, the men’s squad features notable players like Arjun Deshwal, who was the top raider in last season’s Pro Kabaddi League, seasoned defenders Parvesh Bhainswal, Vishal Bhardwaj and Sunil Kumar. Interestingly, none of the 12 players in the men’s team competed at Jakarta 2018. The men’s kabaddi team trials took place on July 9 at the I.G. Stadium in New Delhi. Meanwhile, the women’s trials took place at the SAI Center in Bengaluru on July 10.
Asian Games 2023 previous kabaddi outings
Kabaddi made its debut at the Asian Games during the 1990 edition in Beijing, China. Ever since then, the competition has featured in every edition of the game. The Indian men have so far won seven of the eight gold medals in kabaddi at the Asian Games. They only missed out at Jakarta 2018, where they won bronze after losing out to Iran in the semi-final.
Moreover, the Indian men’s kabaddi team has lost just two matches up until now in all eight of those editions. Just recently, India won the Asian Kabaddi Championship last month after beating Iran in the final match. As such, India are a formidable force in kabaddi.
