The sport, also known as breaking, was included in the Asian Games schedule at China’s request since host cities are now permitted to suggest new events, allowing them to create or reintroduce sports that are well-known in their nation.

The four-member contingent was not cleared by the Ministry of Sports since they did not match the selection criteria, hence India would not be represented in breakdancing at Hangzhou 2022. The event’s hosts, Korea, China, Japan, Hong Kong, and others are anticipated to be strong medal contenders.

As per The Bridge, Arif Iqbal Chaudhary, Eshwar Tiwari, Johanna Antonia Rodrigues, and Siddhi Sumedh were the nominees for the Asian Games in China from the Breakdance Federation of India (BDFI). The Times of India said that the ministry, however, rejected the nominations because they did not fit its ranking criteria. The ministry said:

In men’s individual, Arif is ranked 16 in Asia which was manually calculated from the world rankings maintained by the World Dance Sport Federation (WSDF).

Further was said:

Eshwar has no ranking because he didn’t compete in any ranking tournaments. Arif has 100 points from the BFG World Series (Feb 2023) which would place him 32nd if compared with the Asian Championship results. Eshwar has no points at all. Based on these facts, they are unlikely to make it to the top 10 in Asia.”

A similar reason was given for the women’s side and was stated if they had competed in the Asian Games, these facts make it improbable that they would place in the top ten and that is why they were not advised to appear for the Asian Games 2023.
