During the quarter-finals of the women’s badminton team event at the 2023 Asian Games, PV Sindhu, Ashmita Chaliha, and Gayatri Gopichand-Treesa Jolly all suffered defeats as India lost 0-3 against Thailand. PV Sindhu managed to win her first game against Pornpawee Chochuwong in the opening singles match, but she ultimately lost the next two games, with a final score of 21-14, 15-21, 14-21. In the women’s doubles match, Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly were defeated 19-21, 5-21 by Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai. In the third match, Ashmita Chaliha lost 9-21, 16-21 to Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Notably, the Indian women’s team had previously defeated Mongolia 3-0 in the round of 16.

Later in the day, the Indian men’s badminton team secured a 3-0 victory against Nepal, advancing to the semi-finals. In the first men’s singles match, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen easily won with a score of 21-5, 21-8 against Prince Dahal. Kidambi Srikanth then defeated Sunil Joshi with a score of 21-4, 21-12, doubling India’s lead. In the final singles match, Mithun Manjunath triumphed over Bishnu Katuwal with a score of 21-2, 21-7, securing India’s first badminton medal at Hangzhou 2023. It is confirmed that India will face-off against South Korea in the men’s team semi-final tie with a spot in the championship match at stake.
