With a stunning 7-2 victory over China on Thursday, the Indian Men’s Hockey Team got off to a great start at the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023. At the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Egmore, it was goal after goal as Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Sukhjeet Singh, and Akashdeep Singh put their names on the scoreboard while the affable forward Mandeep Singh reached a personal milestone by scoring his 100th goal for his country on the international stage.

India got off to a rousing start in the first quarter, destroying the Chinese defense with an aggressive attack while playing in front of a noisy home crowd. Harmanpreet Singh, who recently established himself as one of the leading goal scorers in FIH Pro League history, continued his impressive play by scoring back-to-back goals to give India a 2-0 lead. Immediately after, Sukhjeet Singh managed to find the net and give India 3-0 advantage. Despite their humongous lead, India continued their offensive play and by the end of second-quarter, they managed to establish 6-2 lead.

In the second-half, China strengthened their defense and didn’t allow India many goalscoring opportunities. However, their offense wasn’t able to break down Indian defense as the match ended 7-2 in favor of India. Among other matches of Thursday, Malaysia defeated Pakistan 3-1 and South Korea emerged victorious against Japan by score of 2-1. For his stellar display throughout the match, Indian star Mandeep Singh was awarded with the Hero Player of the Match award.
