Thanks to yet another successful day at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, India continue to sit third in the medal standings with nine medals including five gold medals. Currently, hosts Japan sit at the top with humongous total of twenty-four medals including eleven gold medals.

At the Asian Athletics Championships on Friday, Parul Chaudhary earned her maiden major championship gold in the 3000m steeplechase. Ahead of China’s Xu Shuangshuang and Japan’s Reimi Yopshimura, the 28-year-old finished in the lead with a time of 9:38.76. Meanwhile, Shaili Singh won silver in the women’s long jump with a personal best of 6.54 meters. Notably, Japanese athlete Sumire Hata won the gold with a championship-record leap of 6.97 meters on her last try. Unfortunately, Indian star Ancy Sojan finished fourth with her leap of 6.41m.

Before leaving the circuit early due to injury, Indian shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor established his dominance in the continental circuit by successfully retaining his championship. With his second-round throw of 20.23m, Toor clinched the gold medal ahead of Iran’s silver medalist Mehdi Saberi and Kazakhstan’s  Ivan Ivanov. Thanks to their superb performance in the semi-final stage, Indian stars Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh Kumar sealed their berth in the 400m men’s hurdles final. In the women’s heptathlon, Swapna Barman of India is in second place with 3392 points after four events, 56 points behind Uzbek Ekaterina Voronina.
