The format used for the previous two editions will be carried over to the 2023 Asia Cup. There will be a total of 13 matches in the 16th competition, including the final and the next Super 4 stage.
The event will be held in September and will use the 50-over format in consideration of the ODI World Cup in the months of October and November. The competition is renowned for its ability to adapt; in 2016 and 2022, it was changed to a T20 event.
ACC head Jay Shah confirms the meet.
The cricket schedule for 2023–2024 was announced by Jay Shah, head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), along with the procedure for associate countries to qualify for the competition. The victor of the Men’s Premier Cup will receive the final spot, with spots previously reserved for Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
Ten clubs, split into two groups, will compete in 20 games for the Men’s Premier Cup. Hong Kong qualified for the 2022 edition and was paired with Pakistan and India in the initial group round.
The host city for the Asia Cup in 2023 is yet unclear.
The most recent two iterations of the continental competition, in 2018 and 2022, were held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Following an unexpected victory in September 2022 that included a victory over the Men in Green in the championship game, Sri Lanka is the reigning champion. Due to India’s reluctance to cross the border, Pakistan’s plans to host the event have been jeopardised. Right now, both countries are adamant about how they feel about the host country.
Pakistan is adamant that they will retain the right to host the tournament on their own soil, thus Team India is prepared to make a formal request for a neutral location. The ODI World Cup will be held in India in late 2023, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has even considered pulling out of it.
