The Athletic reported that Rooney
Inadvertently revealed Arsenal’s participation in the match during a fan event Thursday evening”
Following the reveal, LS Deputy Commissioner and President, Gary Stevenson also made a statement sharing:
Major League Soccer is pleased to welcome Arsenal FC as the opponent for the 2023 MLS All-Star Game and MLS All-Star Skills Challenge. Arsenal FC is one of the most storied and popular clubs in the world and they are giving their fans a memorable season as they sit at the top of the Premier League table.
A second meeting
The scheduled match is not the first time that Arsenal have gone up against the MLS All-Stars. Back in 2016, the Gunners won 2-1 in San Jose. However, their squad is much different now and features a whole new pool of talented players.
Mikel Arteta’s side are currently eight points clear on top of the EPL table in 28 games. The side has seen a major resurgence this season, with youngsters like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard leading at the front.
Interestingly, La Liga’s club Atletico Madrid were the last European club to feature in the event back in 2019. Diego Simeone’s men won 3-0 in that match, and it will be interesting to see if the MLS All Stars can beat a European team this time out.
