Arcadian Sunrise died on Thursday after returning from Royal Ascot sick. He had won seven of his 18 races. His tragic death occurred just two days after he finished third in the Ascot Stakes on Tuesday.
Arcadian Sunrise earned £12,090 in the Class 2 2m4f race after finishing about a length and a half behind 14-1 winner Coltrane. The horse was the star of John and Miriam’s Dunvargan yard in Waterford, Ireland, and was always popular with the crowds.
Arcadian Sunrise earned a total of £145,555 from his 18 races, winning on the flat and over jumps.
Over hurdles, he won four events and only finished outside the top three twice. On the flat, he won two of eight races and finished second or third four times. He’d been in fantastic form this year, placing fourth in the Chester Cup last month to Cleveland.
The specific cause of death for Arcadian Sunrise is uncertain, and the devastating connections are awaiting the post-mortem findings.
Sean stated, “He rode fine home, but as soon as we put him in the stable, he began rolling and sweating, and he was no longer himself. “We had to take him out for about four hours and stroll him around. We believed it was colic at first, but it wasn’t.
“The vet didn’t know what was wrong; he believed it was travel sickness, but he couldn’t urinate, so we had to take him to Fethard that evening. He began to lie down, and we were unable to lift him, so we had to place him in the box.”
“They checked his heart and said he should be fine in the morning,” he claimed. But the next morning, we received a phone indicating he had worsened overnight, followed by a call a short time later asking for permission to euthanize him.”
