Tuesday came bearing with it massive changes in the Indian government. The Narendra Modi lead BJP government for the first time in its second successive term had decided to go for a cabinet reshuffle.
Stalled by the ongoing COVID pandemic, the cabinet reshuffle and expansion comes at a critical time for the sitting government. Not only are there scores of impending pivotal elections in the country but this was also the first time portfolios were rejuggled and fresh faces inducted into the government.
The ramifications from the cabinet reshuffle were colossal with twelve ministers resigning from their posts prior to the new names being ingrained. Ensuing the oath taking ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the evening in the presence of PM Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind, the positions of each cabinet minister have now been declared.
India Gets New Sports Minister In Anurag Thakur
While there are a string of notable takeaways from the latest development, one which manages to stand tall is that of a change of guard in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Anurag Singh Thakur has been named as the new Sports Minister of the country, replacing Kiren Rijiju in the process.
Where Anurag Thakur has also been handed over charge of the I&B Ministry, Kiren Rijiju has been asked to now take over charge of the Law and Justice Ministry. The duties were previously in the hands of Ravi Shankar Prasad who was amongst the ministers who resigned earlier in the morning.
Anurag’s first major task will be to ensure the Indian contingent’s successful departure for the Tokyo Olympics 2021 and ensuing the athletes are equipped with worldclass resources.

There are 53 union ministries with 30, cabinet ministers and 2 MoS with Independent Charge taking over charge of these dockets. A slew of important ministries will now have new people at the helm.

Meenakshi Lekhi: Ministry of State in External Affairs and Culture Ministry
Anurag Singh: Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Giriraj Singh: Ministry of Rural Development.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi: Ministry of Science and Technology
Amit Shah: Ministry of Cooperation, in addition to Home Ministry.
Ashwini Vaishnaw: railways, IT and communication
