Joshua is a 2012 Olympic gold medalist, who beat Charles Martin back in 2016 to win the IBF heavyweight title. He later beat Wladimir Klitschko for the vacant WBA belt and Joseph Parker for the WBO title.

Despite a good record of title winning bouts, Joshua has been on a declining trajectory since 2019. In his last five fights, AJ’s record has pummeled down to a 2-3 and even lost the belts against Andy Ruiz Jr. He did however, manage to beat Ruiz again that same year.

Following another win over Kubrat Pulev, Joshua yet again lost his titles to former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. The two fighters had a rematch in August where Joshua lost once again. Joshua reacted bitterly towards the loss, throwing down the belts and going on a wild rant.

Ever since his loss against Ruiz, AJ has been switching trainers. For the upcoming match, he will train under acclaimed coach Derrick James and his plans are to get “back to the basics”. Joshua stated:

I feel I have to take Jermaine Franklin more seriously than I do Usyk. I now know better,” Joshua told DAZN. “How I trained, it wasn’t enough. I have to put more pressure on myself. As long as I’m fighting, I’ll have self-expectation to get better.”

Jermaine Franklin turned pro back in 2015 but his biggest bout until recently, was a 2019 win over Rydell Booker. He won the fight via a unanimous decision. Last year in November, Franklin lost against Dillian Whyte who was the former world title challenger on a controversial decision.

Following the fight Jermain’s promoter Dmitriy Salita of Salita Promotions stated:

I know that Jermaine has more potential than he showed in the Dillian Whyte fight. Coming into that fight, he wasn’t that active, and it was a relatively short-notice bout. He crammed into the training camp and did what he could, which was a tremendous performance. Jermaine just fought in November.”
