Ansu Fati has been named as the new number 10 at FC Barcelona after he was given the jersey number previously belonging to Lionel Messi
From Ronaldinho to Lionel Messi to Ansu Fati, the number 10 finally has a new custodian at FC Barcelona.
After Messi was given the shirt number as it was handed down to him from Ronaldinho, Barcelona’s new wonderkid has been deemed worthy of holding the brunt of the colossal expectations on his shoulders. The La Liga side on Tuesday went onto reveal that Ansu Fati would be the new owner of the number 10 jersey after Lionel Messi had earlier moved on to PSG.
Barcelona Hand Over Number 10 Jersey To Ansu Fati
While Barcelona had considered leaving the number vacant for the ongoing 2021/22 season in a bid to honour Messi, the La Liga rules in place made the proposition a no go.
As per the La Liga guidelines, a team needs to fill the 1-25 squad numbers every season which lead to Barcelona handing Ansu Fati the shirt number. Fati who was on the injury bed for nine months had only recently rejoined training after his knee injury. He was given the number 17 shirt previously after having adorned number 22 and 33 since making his debut for the club back in 2019.

Fati had first made his name for Barcelona during his debut against Real Betis in a 5-2 win, one where Fati had become the youngest debutant for the La Liga club in 78 years as he stepped out aged 16 years and 298 days. Fati has gone onto net on 13 occasions in 41 appearances for the club.
Messi meanwhile is wearing the number 30 at PSG, one he had also worn during his early Barcelona days.
