The Google Doodle for August 23rd, 2022 honours Anna Mani for her contributions to the field of meteorological instruments as we are commemorating Anna Mani India’s 104th birthday today. She was one of the first women scientists and was known as the “Weather Woman of India.”

Who Was Anna Mani?

Anna Mani was a renowned meteorologist and former Deputy Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department who was renowned for making important advancements in the instrumentation of solar radiation, ozone, and wind energy. She has recently been in the news because the Google Doodle for August 23rd, 2022 honoured her.

Her full name was Anna Modayil Mani. She was born on 23 August 1918 at Peermade, Kerala. She belongs to a Syrian Christian family. Her father was a civil engineer and an agnostic. She had 7 siblings.

She preferred physics over dance even though she really wanted to pursue dancing. She earned a B.Sc. in physics and chemistry with honours from Chennai’s Pachaiyappas College (formerly known as Madras) in 1939.

She was awarded a scholarship in 1940 to conduct research at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. She enrolled at Imperial College in London in 1945 to pursue graduate physics studies, but she ended up specialising in meteorological equipment.

She was never married. At the time of her death, she was 82 years old.

Her Career

Following her graduation from Pachai College, Anna Mani conducted research on the optical characteristics of diamonds and ruby for Professor CV Raman. She wrote five research articles and sent in her dissertation for a PhD, but she was denied a degree since she didn’t hold a master’s in physics.

She joined the meteorology department in Pune after moving back to India in 1948, where she produced a plethora of studies on meteorological instruments. Mani was in charge of organising the importation of British meteorological equipment. She had taken charge of a division of 121 soldiers by 1953.

She was a member of several scientific associations, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Indian National Science Academy, the American Meteorological Society, the International Solar Energy Society, and the International Association for Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics.

Mani was awarded the INSA K. R. Ramanathan Medal in 1987. She is referred to as the “Weather woman of India” due to her numerous accomplishments.

In 1969, she was appointed Deputy Director General and relocated to Delhi. She worked as a WMO consultant in Egypt in 1975. She stepped down from her position as the Indian Meteorological Department’s deputy director general in 1976.

Cause Of Death Of Anna Mani

Mani experienced a stroke in 1994. A week before turning 83, she passed away in Thiruvananthapuram on August 16, 2001.
