Animal Crossing New Horizons Space Buns Controversy Incident Explained, Meaning
Non-Black players, on the other hand, outraged a large segment of the community when they utilised the same hairstyle on their character inside the game and referred to it as space buns, causing a big division within the community concerning the apparent gatekeeping of “black hairstyles.”
In 2020, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons space buns topic generated a lot of buzz on Twitter
The whole Animal Crossing: New Horizons space bun saga started when Twitter user @stardewleaf uploaded a picture of their in-game avatar wearing the “space buns” haircut. After receiving a lot of backlashes first from the Black Animal Crossing community, the tweet was quickly deleted.
Fans began debating whether the haircut in issue was space buns or afro puffs shortly after the tweet was sent.
While the hairdo may resemble space buns, the textured texture of the buns made it evident that they were afro puffs. Mainly because white people do not even have textured hair.
Furthermore, players remarked that the space buns hairstyle has been explored in prior Animal Crossing games. But that it was not like the haircut brought to New Horizons.
Many players rushed to Twitter to highlight how afro puffs and space buns differ in real life and the game.
This sparked a heated controversy about cultural appropriation. One part blames Black members of the New Horizons group for policing the game’s haircuts. On the other side, other people couldn’t comprehend the fury over a game.
Other members, on the other hand, went out of their way. Simply to explain why misnaming this hairdo was such a significant deal for some of the game’s participants.
The main key point that came out of the discussion after multiple discussions led to the following. It was that Nintendo had included hairstyles like cornrows or afro puffs in their current game. To increase inclusion but gamers refused to recognise this and continued to misname them.
