Besides the injury blow and shock defeat, Juve’s are in more trouble as their recent result means the club have slipped closer to dropping out of the Champions League and falling into the Europa League.
Di Maria Suffers A Muscle Injury
During Tuesday’s match against the Israeli club, Di Maria encountered a muscle injury. It happened when the 34-year-old was running after a pass in midfield just 24 minutes into the game.
The ex-Real Madrid star quickly halted his run and began clutching the back of his right thigh. He looked at his bench immediately while shaking his head and then limped off.
Di Maria looked to be in some discomfort as he hobbled off the pitch looking visibly emotional, and wiped his eyes with his shirt.
The injury has thrown his prospects of competing in what could be his final World Cup with Argentina. The competition in Qatar is just over a month away, and the veteran might not be able to recover in time.
More Pain For Juventus
However, Di Maria’s injury was just one blow for Juve as the club are in more trouble. Maccabi Haifa went ahead in just seven minutes, after Omer Atzili scored a goal.
Things got worse when Atzili scored again just before half-time arrived, making the score 2-0.
Juventus couldn’t score and fight back as the home side who are currently bottom of Group H secured their first win of the tournament.
As of now, Juventus are still in the Champions League, but are likely to drop into the Europa League.
More Champions League Action
Meanwhile, the other teams from Group H, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica faced off against each other at Le Parc des Princes.
Both sides are already on 7 points respectively while Juve and Maccabi Haifa have 3. So while Juventus are in trouble Massimiliano Allegri’s team are still in the Champions League but their chances of retaining a spot look slim.
Paul Pogba, who rejoined Juventus this summer following the end of his contract at Man United, could join his former club in the Europa League.
