Prediction
World No. 9 Cameron Norrie will face No. 11 Andrey Rublev on Monday in the fourth round of the 2022 US Open.
Holger Rune, who is ranked 33rd in the world, was predicted to challenge Norrie for first place. But in the end, Rune lost steam after a valiant beginning as Norrie defeated the Danish player in a straightforward match. The Briton won 7-5, 6-4, 6-1, his third straight victory in straight sets, after spending two hours and 13 minutes on the court.
Norrie entered the match as a massive favourite thanks to victories over Benoit Paire and Joao Sousa, as well as trips to the final in Los Cabos and the quarterfinal in Cincinnati. And when he led 4-2 in the first set, it appeared that the end was near. But Rune refused to give up, bouncing back with a break before losing his serve once more and giving up the set. In the second set, Norrie was two breaks up but lost one of his own before continuing to serve flawlessly the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, Rublev’s current state is not comparable to his prime, but there isn’t much to say about his fighting skills. It speaks a lot about that quality, and it will be very helpful in the fourth round match against Norrie, for him to get and waste three match-points on his serve before going on to win the match in the fifth set tie-breaker.
Rublev narrowly defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (7) in his third round match, which lasted four hours and eleven minutes, to advance to the round of 16 at the US Open for the fourth time. Before dominating Soon-woo Kwon in his second round, Rublev had already played Laslo Djere in a five-setter in his first match.
The playing philosophies of Norrie and Rublev are different. Unlike the Russian, who prefers to knock the cover off the ball, the British player is accurate with his groundstrokes and aims to hit them deep. Although Norrie’s serve has recently improved, Rublev still has the superior one.
Currently, Norrie appears to be in better shape, and he will be confident that he will advance to the US Open’s second week for the first time.
