The Rashtrapati Bhavan’s iconic Mughal Gardens have been renamed Amrit Udyan by the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, know the new name meaning

The scenic Mughal grounds of the Rashtrapati Bhavan will now be now known as Amrit Udyan. President of India, Smt Draupadi Murmu took a very bold step for marking this change at “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,” commemorating 75 years of Independence.

Shifting and renaming the Mughal Gardens as Amrit Udyan, is already raising eyebrows and it will likely kick up another storm for the BJP-led central government. Moreover, party leaders have celebrated the president’s decision as it is a necessary measure to break colonial shackles of the past and then stop glorifying “invaders.”

Significance of Amrit Udyan

President Droupadi Murmu will be gracing the opening of Amrit Udyan. These are the gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan which will be opening early this year soon. Smt Draupadi Murmu will inaugurate the opening of the Amrit Udyan and kick off the Udyan Utsav which will be held on the 29th of January 2023.

Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, Mughal Gardens (now Amrit Udyan) is known as the ‘first garden of the Republic of India and confirming the name change, the deputy press secretary to President Droupadi Murmu, Navika Gupta, said, “On the occasion of the celebrations of 75 years of Independence as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the President of India has given a common name to the Rashtrapati Bhavan gardens as Amrit Udyan.”

Amrita (Sanskrit: अमृत, IAST: amṛta), Amrit or Amata in Pali is a Sanskrit word that means “immortality” while Udyan means garden.

The renaming of the Mughal Gardens as Amrit Udyan is an initiative by the president. So, it is very important for knowing the rich history of the beautiful Mughal Gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the significance of their new name, “Amrit Udyan”

The president of India Draupadi Murmu declared on the 28th of January that the Mughal Gardens would be named as Amrit Udyan. The decision is a part of larger “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” festivities and commemorating the 75 years of independence in India.

The year 2022 has marked the 75th year of India’s independence from the British. It was a prosperous year for a country having 1.4 billion people and the Government of India sought to further instill feelings of pride and patriotism with the initiative “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.”
