Always Follow Your Nose Reference Explained
In the eighth episode of “The Rings of Power,” Nori chooses to accompany The Stranger on his journey across Middle Earth in pursuit of his purported hometown of Rhun.
Sadly, she admits that despite having a reasonable sense of direction, her “Feet feel heavy as iron, not to mention I haven’t an inkling which way to walk.” The Stranger then gestures to a heading and advises Elanor Brandyfoot to always “follow your nose” when in doubt since “there’s a sweet smell on the air this way.”
In “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” Gandalf stated something similar when the fellowship was navigating the Mines of Moria.
After being trapped in the mines for so long, Ian McKellen’s Gandalf discovers that he has lost the right path through the maze of Dwarven tunnels.
At the intersection of three wide passages, where the group stops for a while, Froda inquires about Gollum—the enigmatic monster that has been following them for some time.
Finally, Gandalf adds, “It’s that way,” to which Merry joyfully responds, “He’s remembered!”
Gandalf, however, is quick to dismiss the little Hobbit once more, claiming that he has forgotten the proper path but that “the air doesn’t smell so foul down here… If in doubt, Meriadoc [Merry], always follow your nose.”
This advice is identical to that given by The Stranger in “The Rings of Power” episode 8, and oddly, both are addressed at Hobbits/Harfoots.
