As Mikaela Shiffrin takes part in the upcoming 2023 Alpine skiing World Cup this weekend, she could either equal, or even break the all-time FIS Alpine Ski World Cup wins record.
Mikaela Shiffrin 2023 Alpine skiing World Cup
Mikaela will take part in three speed events (two Super G and a downhill), at the competition in Kvitfjell, Norway. The double Olympic champion is set to compete in her first World Cup event ever since the 2023 World Championships. She previously skipped the stop in Crans Montana, Switzerland.
The upcoming event will also mark her debut racing in Kvitfjell as it is part of the women’s calendar for the first time ever this season.
Shiffrin, recently won her 85th win in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czechia and could set a record in the upcoming event. The 27-year-old could even surpass the record of 86 World Cup wins set by Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark’s.
Shiffrin will be competing in several events from 3-6 March, and just one victory would put her in level with Stenmark. There are however, no slalom and giant slalom races at the upcoming event, which are her favoured technical events.
Mikaela Shiffrin Current Form
Mikaela has so far won one Super G and finished second once at the Worlds this season. She took part in four downhills with her best result coming in at fourth place. Shiffrin also currently leads the overall World Cup standings with 1,697, points. She is way ahead of Petra Vlhova (975) and Lara Gut-Behrami (926) who are in second and third.
With just two stops left this season, the Colorado native will be looking for her fifth big crystal globe. If she wins the tile, she would be the second on the all-time winner’s list behind Austria’s Annemarie Moser-Pröll. Annemarie currently has the most number of titles with six titles to her name.
