Venkatesh Iyer, born in Indore, was a bright student and was interested in his academics. He has a supportive family as they saw his talent and his mother in particular wanted him to play cricket. Iyer feels more confident as a student than as a cricketer. He said that he has always been a bright student because his grasping power is great.

The decision between academics and cricket

Iyer was always focused on his academics and he did not start playing cricket properly till he was 19. He enrolled himself in a B.Com and CA degree. He cleared the intermediate exams for CA in 2016. But he had to make a decision now. If he attempts CA final exam, then he would not be able to play cricket for a long time.

He decided to go on with cricket and dropped CA preparations. Instead, he went for MBA in finance and got into a decent college where his faculty liked cricket. They took care of his low attendance and encouraged him to play.

Iyer had to make another decision. He got a great offer from the accounting firm Deloitte in Bengaluru. But he did not reply to that offer, which paid off for him. He made a Ranji Trophy debut later that year. Iyer said that it was just a plan B in his life. He said that his parents wanted him to have a simple degree for backup which he got successfully.

Domestic performances, stats, IPL auction and price

Iyer has been in the domestic circuit since 2016, but he peaked in the season 2020/21. He was at the top of the run-chart for Madhya Pradesh in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored 227 runs with an average of 75.66 and a strike rate of 149.34. In Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 198 runs in 146 balls against Punjab which caught the eye of many selectors.
