US Open 2021 kicks-off in less than 10 days but read on to know the about the withdrawals and why these tennis players have withdrawn from the fourth slam of the year

The hard-court tennis tournament will be played from 30th August and go on till 12th September at the Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York City. However, three of the biggest tennis stars have withdrawn from the tournament due to injuries. Read on to know who they are and why this is so.

US Open 2021 Withdrawals: Why Have These Tennis Players Withdrawn And Return Date

Roger Federer

Tennis fans received a major blow when Federer announced last Sunday that he will be sidelined for many months due to a knee injury in the grass-court season and thus, will not be able to make it to Flushing Meadows. The Swiss made the announcement on his Instagram, saying how pulling out is the right thing for him to do right now because he wants to stay healthy.

Dominic Thiem

The defending champion Dominic Thiem who would’ve had so many eyes locked on him, had he been competing, also withdrew from the tournament. The Austrian took to Twitter to talk about how we would miss the entire 2021 season due to a wrist injury he suffered back in June, at the Mallorca Open against Adrian Mannarino.

Stan Wawrinka

2016 Swiss Champion Stan Wawrinka pulled out of the US Open this year, courtesy of ongoing recovery from a left foot surgery. What makes this a bummer is that Stan has advanced to the US Open quarter-finals in six of his past nine appearances. However, following the Swiss star’s withdrawal, former World No. 1 and 2012 champion Andy Murray was able to move into the main draw.

Other Tennis Stars Sustaining Injuries Ahead Of The Marquee Competition

Apart from these three, Rafael Nadal’s left foot condition has also been recurring lately and Novak Djokovic, who withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics before the bronze medal mixed doubles match, also cited a shoulder injury afterwards. Serena Williams too, is recovering from a right hamstring injury and is yet to confirm if she will play in New York.

Moreover, Simona Halep and Jennifer Brady also withdrew from the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Halep suffered a torn right adductor muscle while Brady sustained a left knee injury during her match against Jelena Ostapenko. Venus Williams, Novak Djokovic and Sofia Kennin did not play at Cincinnati either.
