Flamengo, the Copa Libertadores champions were the overwhelming favourites going into the 2022 Club World Cup semifinal matchup against Al Hilal.
Even yet, the travelling Saudi fans displayed a banner proclaiming their title as “Asia’s leader” with confidence. The name Al Hilal, which means “The Leaders,” is shortened to Al-Za’seem as it’s nickname. The Saudi giants defeated Flamengo in the semifinals before losing to Real Madrid 5-3 after scoring three goals. Al Hilal’s opportunity to contend for their first world championship came when they won the AFC Champions League a record-breaking fourth time.
With the addition of the Champions League, Cup Winners’ Cup, and Super Cup, no other club has snagged the whole set of Asian club competitions. In addition, Al Hilal has won the Saudi Crown Prince’s Cup more frequently than any other club in the Kingdom and has amassed the most top-tier victories (18) in Saudi football.
It came as no surprise when Al Hilal was awarded the “Best Asian Club of the 21st Century” by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS). For context, Real Madrid won the prize among European teams.

Who owns Al Hilal?
Al Hilal was one of the four clubs that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) purchased in June 2023.
The Premier League CEO Richard Masters revealed that he had been given “legally-binding assurances” that there was no connection between PIF and the Saudi government after the same organisation bought a majority stake in Premier League team Newcastle United.
Prior to PIF acquiring a 75% ownership in the club as part of a planned takeover of the sport, Al Hilal was owned by the wealthy Prince Abdullah bin Musaad bin Abdulaziz Al Al Saud, a self-confessed lover of “money and sport.” PIF is also the powerful financial force behind the breakaway LIV Golf brand.
Who has signed for Al Hilal?
Al Hilal may have unlimited wealth, but if its owners had the ability to spot a deal, they wouldn’t be among the wealthiest investment vehicles in the world. At one point this summer, Al Hilal reportedly made a proposal for five Chelsea players. Purchasing in bulk is always less expensive.
