Al Bayt Stadium History

Al Bayt Stadium is among the eight stadiums chosen to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup games in Qatar. The stadium is also known as Al Khor Stadium. The construction of the stadium started in late 2015 and after the wait for nearly six years, the stadium was finally open to hosting matches on 30 November 2021. The opening game at this venue was the 2021 Arab Cup group stage match between Qatar and Bahrein. The Al Bayt Stadium also hosted the 2021 Arab Cup final, which Algeria won.

The design of the stadium reflects the inside of a Bedouin tent: coloured red, white, and black. These tents, the Bayt al sha’ar, are also where the stadium gets its name from. The beautiful tent structure that surrounds the stadium was modelled after the Bayt al Sha’ar of Qatar’s nomadic people. The roof is retractable, opening and closing in 20 minutes. The stadium was designed by Dar Al-Handasah and is the second largest stadium in Qatar after Lusail Stadium.

Cost: €770 million.

Stadium Capacity

The Al Bayt Stadium has a 60,000-person capacity. The top tier of the stadium will be demolished after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, reducing the stadium’s capacity to 32000.

Al Bayt Stadium Location

The only FIFA World Cup stadium not to be located in the greater Doha region is Al Bayt Stadium, which is situated on the southern border of the little settlement of Al Khor City. About 40 kilometres north of Doha, on the Persian Gulf, is the city of Al Khor. About 4 kilometres separate the location from the centre of Al Khor.
