He is a native of Pandharkawda village in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal region, and attended the Vidarbha Cricket Academy trials in 2008 and found a supporter in former Mumbai wicketkeeper Sulakshan Kulkarni, who urged him to bowl in BCCI-sponsored competitions.

Karnewar played in the DY Patil T20 tournament in Mumbai and tried out for the Rajasthan Royals, but was not selected. Vidarbha gave him his big break in December 2015, when he made his List-A debut against Odisha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Karnewar, who is also a capable batter, scored 72 runs and took two wickets in a losing cause in the match.
He finished the tournament as Vidarbha’s highest wicket-taker, with 16 victims from seven games, and went on to capture seven wickets from nine games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. In the 2016 IPL auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore paid INR 10 lakh for Karnewar.
