Magnus Carlsen suffered his first loss in the 2023 Champions Chess Tour at the hands of Arjun Erigaisi but, the Indian prodigy was unable to prevent the reigning world champion from qualifying for the final of Airthings Masters. In the Division-1 semi-final tie, Arjun lost the opening game and drew the second before winning the third to level the score. Although Arjun forced a draw in the last match, Carlsen defeated him in the Armageddon match with black pieces to qualify for the championship match against Hikaru Nakamura.
In Division II, Nodirbek Yakubboev’s victory against Dmitry Andreikin represents the biggest shock of Wednesday. During the Winners semi-final tie, he will play Fabiano Caruana. Meanwhile in the other semi-final, Yu Yangyi will play Alexander Predke, who has qualified by walkover after Ian Nepomniachtchi failed to feature in their tie.
Elsewhere, the Winners Bracket Semifinals of Division III saw GM R Praggnanandhaa emerge victorious against GM Aleksandr Lenderman. Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Leg 1 – Airthings Masters 2023 prize money pool distribution
A total prize fund of $235,000 will be offered at the 2023 Airthings Masters, with $112,500 set aside for Division-1, which will include a total of eight top competitors. Division 2 will include a total of sixteen participants and a net prize money of $71,500. The prize fund for the 32-player Division-3 will be $51,000.
