This year’s Airthings Masters 2022 chess league phase has seen the completion of quarterfinal, we take a look at the latest results, standings, table, semi-final schedule.

In total, sixteen participants competed in the round-robin stage of the online event, with eight moving on to the knockout stage.

Airthings Masters 2022 Semi-finals Schedule, Date, Time And Venue

The event started from February 19 and will run till February 26, with action starting at 18.00 CET every day. The tournament is taking place in online mode due to travel restrictions. Today will be the second day of play-offs at Airthings Masters as semi-final matches will be settled.

Day-5 featured the quarterfinal matches. Players were eager to win and secure semi-final berths. Day-6 of Airthings masters will begin from 24th February 18:00 CET.

Airthings Masters Chess 2022 Day 5 Quarterfinals Results

There were no blitz tiebreakers in the Airthings Masters quarterfinals. Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Andrey Esipenko, and Vladislav Artemiev all advanced to the semifinals after winning their four-game rapid series.

Artemiev was the only player to defeat a higher-rated opponent, winning 2.5-1.5 over Ding Liren. Following his elimination of the world’s third-best player, Artemiev will face the world champion Magnus Carlsen in the semi-finals.

In the other match, Nepomniachtchi will compete against Esipenko in an all-Russian battle.

Airthings Masters 2022 Chess Rules And Format

The top eight players from the prelims earned play-off spots and will battle it out to win the tournament. The quarterfinals and semi-finals will be one-day, four-game matches, whereas the final will be two such matches spread out over two days.

Tournament Rules

Starting with move 1, the players have 15 minutes to complete all of their moves, plus a 10-second increment. A win earns 3 points, while a tie earns 1 point in the preliminary round.

If a tiebreak is necessary, the players will play two 5+3 games and, if necessary, a single Armageddon game, in which White has 5 minutes against Black’s 4, but a tie count as a win for Black. Before move 40, no draw offers are permitted.
