According to reports, Barbora passed away on Monday, October 30, while undergoing medical treatment at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi. He was reportedly suffering from an undisclosed illness.

P K Barbora was a former Indian Air Marshal who was born on December 10, 1950, in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. Barbora was a highly experienced aviator who had over 3500 hours of flight experience under his name. He was 72 years old at the time of his passing. Barbora was a very outspoken gentleman and often got into trouble with politicians as well.

Prior to starting his career as a pilot in the armed forces, Barbora graduated from the College of Combat, Mhow, after completing his higher command course. He eventually got commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot on June 13, 1970, and took part in the 1971 war. PK Barbora was a well-qualified flying instructor and a fighter combat leader. He was a long-serving staff member of the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment, which is a premiere flying establishment under the IAF. During his career, he served twice in the Directorate of Air Staff Inspection (DASI) at Air Headquarters.

Barbora was also a member of the first Jaguar Squadron and the IAF’s maiden Air Combat Simulator. It was notably, the first of its kind in Asia. During his time there, he took part in several operational assignments, including taking command of a MiG-21 squadron, serving as Chief Operations Officer of a fighter airbase, and serving as the Air Officer Commanding of a premier fighter airbase placed under Eastern Air Command.

Most notably, PK Barbora also served as Air Attaché at the Embassy of India, Moscow. He then served as Assistant Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Perspective Plans and Force Structure) in HQ Integrated Defence Staff. Barbora also served as the Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Inspection) at Air Headquarters. He eventually rose to the rank of Senior Air Staff Officer, EAC, before taking charge as the AOC-in-C. Following his contributions and service, he subsequently became the AOC-in-C of WAC.

Air Marshal Barbora was the first officer from the Northeast to achieve a coveted high post in the Armed Forces. Barbora is also a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and Vayu Sena Medal (VM). Moreover, he was one of the Honorary Aides-de-Camp (ADC) to the President, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the India Armed Forces.
