Magnus Carlsen, who recently clinched 2022 Meltwater Chess Tour Championship, was eliminated in the semi-final stage of Aimchess Rapid by Jan-Krzysztof Duda. Following this win, preliminary stage winner Duda has set-up a tantalizing final matchup against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov that will begin on Thursday and run through Friday.
Mamedyarov barely made it through after defeating Romanian ace Richard Rapport via tie-breaker after recovering from a point behind. Meanwhile, Duda played aggressively from very first tie and this strategy paid-off as he won second match to take the lead. Later, Duda continued his attacking play-style that saw him win against Carlsen by score of 3-1.
Mamedyarov began his semifinal clash against Rapport with a loss, but after second and third match ended as draws, he grew confident and defeated Richard Rapport in the final rapid game of day to force blitz tiebreaks. Mamedyarov emerged as victor of subsequent blitz play-off thanks to one win plus one tire from two games. With this win, he has booked his spot in championship match against Duda that will last two days with four rapid games scheduled for each day.
Despite his own superb form, Mamedyarov claimed that his opponent Duda will be slight favorite going into final since Duda knocked out Carlsen in semi-finals and will be full of confidence.
