To win prestigious Aimchess Rapid and claim his second Meltwater Champions Chess Tour victory of year, Jan-Krzysztof Duda held off a determined comeback from Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. The nail-biting final between Duda and Mamedyarov went to blitz play-off after Shak’s win in Day 2 of final, but blunder by Mamedyarov in blitz games allowed Duda to seal victory.

2022 Aimchess Rapid Jan-Krzysztof Duda vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov Result, Score, Winner, & Prize Money Distribution

Jan-Krzysztof Duda needed just a draw on second day of final to win title of 2022 Aimchess Rapid ahead of his rival Mamedyarov, but Mamedyarov’s outstanding performance forced the tie into a blitz play-off. Mamedyarov got off to a strong start in the opening rapid match of Day 2 and won to take 1-0 lead.

Later in the second rapid game, Mamedyarov destroyed Duda’s defense to win and extend his lead to 2-0. When he realized defeat was imminent, Duda settled for draw early in third rapid match, so he could refocus before biitz play-off. In the end, Duda’s strategies were successful because the first bitz game was won by Duda after 20 moves, and Mamedyarov’s error in the second game gave Duda victory by score of 5.5-3.5.

Magnus Carlsen has already clinched the overall Tour championship, placing Duda in second place heading into the final tournament in San Francisco next month. Mamedyarov, alongside Carlsen, Arjun Erigaisi, Duda, Praggnanandhaa, Liem Le, and two more players, have qualified for the tournament that will begin on 14th November.

After finishing as runner-up in 2022 Aimchess Rapid, Mamedyarov has jumped to sixth position in the overall standings of 2022 Meltwater Chess Tour. From recently finished Aimchess Rapid, champion Duda has claimed $32,000 including $7,000 in-game prizes, while runner-up Mamedyarov bagged $21,750 including in-game bonus of $6,750.

Aimchess Rapid, which was the penultimate tournament of 2022 Meltwater Chess Tour, was won by Jan-Krzysztof Duda, who received a $25,000 top prize. Meanwhile, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov received $15,000 award for finishing as runner-up. After losing in the semifinal round, Richard Rapport and Magnus Carlsen, the current world champion, each received prize money totaling $6,000. In addition to these position-based prize money, in-game bonus prize of around $90,000 was distributed among players based on number of wins.
