2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Leg 8 – Aimchess Rapid Day 4 Results, Score, Quarterfinal Schedule, & Prelims Standings
On Monday, final three rounds of Aimchess Rapid preliminary competition were played and ultimately, Jan-Krzysztof Duda had the highest score in the single round-robin, as eight of the sixteen players advanced to the knockout round. Only two players remained in suspense as to who would advance, as Anish Giri and Vidit Gujrathi had a chance to earn the coveted eighth berth in the knockout as they reached the fifteenth round. In the end, Vidit won and went on to the quarterfinals, largely because Arjun Erigaisi defeated Giri.
Three of the five Indian players made it to the knockout round. Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh Dommaraju finished the single round-robin ahead of Magnus Carlsen, each of whom had never before defeated the world champion. Vidit Gujrathi, who just about made it through, will play prelims champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the quarterfinals. Tuesday’s knockout matches including Duda vs Vidit, Gukesh vs Rapport, Mamedyarov vs Abdusattorov, and Carlsen vs Erigaisi will continue the tournament.
Duda lost three games during preliminary stage, including two on Monday, but still managed to finish with 28 points out of 45 points. In the overall tour standings, the Polish superstar is ranked second, just behind Carlsen. Duda finished second in the Charity Cup and took first place in the Oslo Esports Cup, the first Major of the year’s tour.
