What Is The Reason Behind This Demand?

In 2018, social activist Pravin Ram, who is from the Ahir community, told the media that the demand for an Ahir Regiment was legitimate and that the Indian Army’s history is full of valour from the Ahir community, with the Battle of Rezang La with Chinese troops in 1962 serving as a shining example.

For the uninitiated, 114 Ahirs were killed at the battle of Rezang La in 1962.

The need for a separate regiment for the community, according to Arun Yadav, a member of the SARM, has been a long-standing demand of the community. He also said,

For over 70 years, the community has made sacrifices for the country in more ways than one. Ahirs have a large representation in the Army. As there is a separate caste-based regiment for Sikhs, Gorkhas, Jats, Garhwal, Rajputs, we demand the formation of the Ahir Regiment.

Who Is Behind These Protests?

A group of people from the Ahir community held a nine-day hunger strike in 2018 under the banner of the ‘Sanyukt Ahir Regiment Morcha’ or ‘SARM’ to urge that their demands should be addressed. When they obtained guarantees from politicians that their desire for the Ahir Regiment would be considered, the agitation came to an end.

But now, since February 4, their members again have been sitting in an indefinite protest near the Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurgaon as their demands aren’t fulfilled to date.

Several politicians and political leaders from various parties have supported that demand, including former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Akshoy Pratap Yadav’s wife Raj Lakshmi Yadav, RJD leader Manoj Jha, Congress MP Deepender Hooda and many more.
