Despite the tournament being held in 2023, it is officially labeled as a 2022 event, because it was previously postponed by six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic which caused a scheduling backlog.
African Nation Cup CHAN 2023
The African Nation Cup CHAN 2023, is held every two years and alternates with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This year’s edition features an expanded 18 national teams made up of only domestic-based players.
The first CHAN tournament took place in 2009 and featured only eight teams. All CHAN matches count as full international caps for players as well as in the FIFA World Rankings calculation. However, only 17 of the 18 qualified teams are participating in the tournament this year. This is because two-time defending CHAN champions Morocco did not get authorization to fly into Algeria.
It all started due to tense relations and ongoing disputes between the two countries. Back in 2021, Algeria cut diplomatic ties with Morocco and closed its airspace to all Moroccan aircraft and any form of air travel starting from the country.
Difference between CHAN 2023 and AFCON
The African Nations Championship (CHAN) was set up in 2009 to help develop and promote domestic football in Africa. The tournament is held biannually and mainly serves as a showcase for players from Africa and based in Africa.
One major difference between the CHAN tournament and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is that the CHAN tournament restricts team squads only to players who are currently playing in their home country’s domestic league. For example, a Ugandan player who doesn’t play in his home country’s domestic league cannot participate in the tournament.
