In the round of 16, there were several thrilling matches mixed with surprises, and some of the favorites; including Morocco, the 2022 World Cup semifinalist and reigning champions; were eliminated from the competition.
At a tournament that has witnessed thrills, spills, and some unexpected twists, hosts Ivory Coast were in danger of abandoning their own party early and falling by the wayside alongside other continental powers.
Following their penalties-based victory against holders Senegal, Ivory Coast will now play Mali. DR Congo and Guinea, who defeated Egypt and Equatorial Guinea, respectively, are also drawn to that side of the draw.
Friday’s quarterfinal matchup between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Angola, a formidable team that easily defeated Namibia in the last-16, will see Nigeria go over Cameroon. There have been shock departures from the group stage for both, four time winners Ghana and 2019 champions Algeria. Equatorial Guinea and Cape Verde have unexpectedly emerged victorious from challenging groups, while several other underdogs have taken points away from the top seeds.
Angola hopes to carry on their fairytale against Nigeria, one of the tournament favourites. Guinea will face D.R. Congo, who haven’t won a game in the competition, in the quarterfinals. Unbeaten Cape Verde will face South Africa, which eliminated Morocco, a team that made it to the 2022 World Cup semifinals, in the round of 16. Check out the full last eight matches.
