History Of The AFC Women’s Asian Cup
The Women’s Asian Cup was set up by the Asian Ladies Football Confederation, also known as the ALFC. ALFC is a part of the Asian Football Federation or AFC.
The Women’s Asian Cup was started 46 years ago in 1975. Initially, the competition was held once in two years. But from 1983 to 1989, the cup was held once in three years. The competition got modified when the AFC announced that the Cup will assist as a qualifier for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Hence, the Women’s Asian Cup began to take place once in four years.
In 1986, a merger took place and the ALFC merged into the AFC. From 1975 to 1981, the duration of the games was only 60 minutes. China’s women’s team was the most dominant side as they won every Women’s Asian Cup from 1986 to 1999 until North Korea broke China’s streak with a cup win in 2001.
From the 2022 Asian Cup, the competition has been extended to 12 groups from 8.
