On Friday at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait City, the young Indian men’s football team succumbed to 2-4 loss against Iraq in their first match of AFC Under-20 Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers. Abdulrazzaq Qasim’s goal in the second minute gave Iraq the lead when he curled the ball in with the outside of his boot. When Gurkirat finished off a feed from Taison in the 22nd minute, India’s pressure had paid off. In the 33rd minute, Gurkirat switched from being the scorer to the giver as he whipped in a beautiful through ball for Maheson Singh, who chipped it beyond the goalkeeper. Following this, India went into half-time with a 2-1 lead and momentum in their favor.
Later in second-half, a header from Hayder Tofee gave Iraq the equalizer to tie score at 2-2. In 63rd minute, Sadeeq Shaheen scored after slipping past the Indian defense and gifted 3-2 lead to Iraq. During 71st minute, Azad Kalouri’s cross was deflected into the goal by Bikash Yumnam, which gave Iraq a two-goal cushion and put the match away from India’s reach. Elsewhere, Australia thrashed Kuwait by score of 4-1 to establish early lead in Group H standings.
On October 16 at 7:00 PM IST, India will play its second qualifier match against Australia. Later, India will face Kuwait on October 18 at 10:00 IST in their last qualifying match. All games in Group H will be played at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium.
