The AFC U-17 Asian Cup kicks off with Yemen vs Malaysia today, Thursday, June 15 and will go on until July 2.
AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 team India preview
The U-17 Indian football team are placed in Group D alongside Vietnam, Uzbekistan and defending champions Japan. India begins their campaign against Vietnam on Saturday, led by 16-year-old attacking midfielder Korou Singh Thingujam as the captain.
India head coach Bibiano Fernandes will face their biggest in the group stage when they meet defending champions Japan on June 23. Japan are currently the most successful side in the tournament having already won three titles.
Meanwhile, India have qualified for the main event only nine times and their best results came in 2002 and 2018. The team reached the quarter-finals in both those years. India qualified for this year’s AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 after finishing runners-up behind Saudi Arabia in Group D of the qualification round.
AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 format
The upcoming edition of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup was previously supposed to take place in Bahrain in 2020, but had to be postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The upcoming AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2023 will begin with the group stages following which the top two teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the quarter-finals.
The teams will then progress to the semi-finals where the two final teams will be decided. The two semi-finalists will also get to compete in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2023 later this year in November. So far, India has featured at FIFA U-17 World Cup only once when they hosted the event back in 2017.
