The AFC Champions League (abbreviated as ACL) is an annual continental club football competition contested by Asia’s top-division football clubs, know the golden boot race leading players in 2022
It is Asia’s most prestigious club competition, with national league champions (and, in certain circumstances, one or more runners-up) competing for their respective national organisations.
Season 2022
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will host the 41st edition of Asia’s best club football event in 2022, and the 20th under the current AFC Champions League banner.
Despite being held from 2022 to 2023, this season is officially the last in an all-year-round (spring-to-autumn) schedule; from next season onwards, the contests will convert to an autumn-to-spring schedule.
The Tournament’s Format And Teams
A total of 40 clubs compete in the round-robin group stage of the championship. Clubs from Asia’s greatest national leagues receive automatic invitations, while clubs from lower-ranked countries must qualify through qualifying playoffs and compete in the AFC Cup as well. The winner of the AFC Champions League advances to the FIFA Club World Cup.
The away goal rule is crucial in this situation. In the event of a tie, the team that scored more goals in the Head-to-Head encounter’s away match takes precedence over the other.
Some Facts
The tournament champions will automatically qualify for the AFC Champions League in 2023–24, entering the qualification play-offs.
This year has a higher number of preliminary player registrations than prior editions, with 35 players able to register, up from 30 in previous editions.
Although the AFC’s “3+1” foreign player rule will be in force during the match, this will allow for additional foreign players to be included in the squad.
The defending champions, Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia, defeated Pohang Steelers in the 2021 final.
