Chopra’s international career began with two half-centuries against New Zealand in the second Test in Mohali in 2003–04. He played in several good combinations with Virender Sehwag during the 2003–04 trip of Australia, including two century opening partnerships in Melbourne and Sydney. Chopra’s work in seeing off the new ball was credited with India’s high scores in that series, which included middle-order batsman Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.
On the subsequent tour to Pakistan, he and Virender Sehwag put on another century partnership as India scored over 600 runs in the first innings to set up a massive innings victory against arch-rivals Pakistan in the first Test at Multan. Apart from a century from Yuvraj Singh, who played in place of injured captain Sourav Ganguly, the Indian batsmen failed in a losing effort in the second Test. Chopra was dropped and Yuvraj was kept when Ganguly returned for the final Test.
After Tendulkar was injured for the First Test in Bangalore, Chopra was reintroduced as Sehwag’s partner in the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Chopra was dropped for the following match in Chennai when Tendulkar returned, and Yuvraj was promoted to begin the batting. Yuvraj struggled as well, prompting Chopra’s recall for the Third Test at Nagpur.
Chopra was discarded for the final time following a double failure as Australia won a series in India for the first time in 35 years, after his career average gradually declined from 46.25 to only 23. Chopra was replaced by Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir, and in the competition to partner Sehwag in the Test side, Gambhir and Wasim Jaffer overtook him. Due to his low scoring rate, he was not considered for One Day Internationals.
IPL Career
He was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 1 and IPL 2, but was sent back to India after being found unfit for IPL 2 T-20 matches. Rajasthan Royals had signed him for the IPL 4 season.
Domestic Career
Aakash scored 4 and 197 for Delhi in the Nissar Trophy against SNGPL (winners of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy from Pakistan) in September 2008.Although the match ended a tie, SNGPL was awarded the trophy based on a first-innings lead.
Chopra joined Rajasthan as a guest player in the Ranji Plate division after playing for Delhi for a long time. Rajasthan became the first Plate division team to win the Ranji Trophy, and he repeated the feat in the 2010–2011 season. He has three victories to his credit. One with Delhi and two with Rajasthan. He’s one of the few Indian cricketers who have scored over 8,000 First-Class runs.
