On an exhilarating opening night at the Winter Gardens, newcomer Rowby-John Rodriguez eliminated eighth seed Jonny Clayton as Peter Wright started the defense of his Betfred World Matchplay championship with a victory over Madars Razma.
Betfred World Matchplay Tournament Format
All matches in the first round will use the best of 19 legs format. Meanwhile, all matchups in the second round will be best of 21 legs. All matchups in the quarterfinals will afterwards be best-of-31-legs affairs. The semi-final will similarly follow a Best of 33 Legs format, while the final will follow a Best of 35 Leg format.

2022 Betfred World Matchplay Latest Results, Day 2 Schedule, Venue, And Draw
Wright easily advanced to round two with an easy 10-4 victory over debutant Razma. Wright is vying to become just the fourth player in World Matchplay history to retain the prized Phil Taylor Trophy. Rodriguez, who averaged 99 to defeat Clayton 10-7 and become the first seed to lose in this year’s tournament, gave what was undoubtedly the performance of the evening.
At the Winter Gardens, Van den Bergh sent a message to his championship contenders by easily defeating Callan Rydz to begin his quest for a second World Matchplay victory. The 2020 champion kept up his hot run with a decisive 10-2 win over Rydz in the World Championship quarterfinals. In other matches, Ratajski, who advanced to the 2021 semi-finals, began this year’s competition with a commanding 10-6 victory over former Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting to maintain his outstanding record at the Winter Gardens.
On Sunday, there will be two intense rounds of first-round play including a heavyweight clash between two-time winner Michael van Gerwen and 2013 runner-up Adrian Lewis. Former champions James Wade and Gary Anderson will face off against Martin Lukeman and Daryl Gurney, respectively, while Michael Smith, the third seed, faces off against Andrew Gilding, who is in good form. In a tantalizing match, World Cup champion Damon Heta will go on Premier League runner-up Joe Cullen, while UK Open champion Danny Noppert will take on Brendan Dolan first.
